Pete Hartley didn't gain his musical experience sitting on
his backside in a po-faced conservatoire, he gained it on
the streets of London and Birmingham, busking and playing
smoky jazz clubs. If he didn't get people's feet tapping and
their faces smiling, he didn't get paid, so he learned the
art of performance very early on!
These early experiences shaped Pete into an all-round
entertainer and he burst onto the national scene in 1987 on
the talent show “New Faces”. His searing interpretation of
jazz standard “Autumn Leaves” won him the heat, the
adulation of the audience and the unanimous praise of the
judging panel, being described by judge Ray Alan as the
“British Stephane Grapelli”.
Pete's skill and experience in focusing his performance on
the audience has paid off for him as a function musician. As
well as an ear for music, Pete has an innate sense of the
mood of an audience, and he can change the setlist and style
of music to match the energy levels on the dancefloor. This
raises Pete above less experienced and skilled players, and
playing without sheet music enables him to improvise and
make eye contact with the audience.
Pete does not merely play, he performs, and his genuine love
for all the styles of music he plays is evident in every
note he plays and every move he makes on stage. Whether he
is playing a tender ballad at a funeral or a funky piece of
disco-pop at a wedding reception, you know that when you
hire Pete for the evening, as well as his musical skill you
hire his heart and his emotions as well.
